Outsource your bookkeeping to free your time to do what you do best

One advantage of the introduction of the GST was initially to force you to review your finances on a quarterly basis resulting in a greater awareness of your ongoing financial position.

This has led to many small businesses utilising a computerised accounting software package such as MYOB or Quickbooks to do the hackwork and present you with the necessary reports and if required even the BAS itself.

However, owning the software does not make you a bookkeeper, and whilst the software companies have [Read more →]

Any Response From Minister For Broadband?

August 15th, 2008 · No Comments

More about customer service:

Technology to talk to people in outer space- but cannot get response from Canberra

There’s a touch of irony that we cannot even get a response from the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy

Why does it take so long for someone whose portfolio is Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy to respond to an email in the Twenty First Century, when Communications have been QUICKER than they have ever been, and we can talk to people on the moon and in space, but cannot get a response from a Minister in Canberra?

Not even an autoresponder? You’d think that someone in the office of the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy would have the technology to set up an autoresponder to reply to emails sent to their office. If politicians were in private enterprise how long would they survive?

We get back to clients with bookkeeping enquiries as soon as is possible.

When clients contact us with bookkeeping enquiries, we strive to get back to them as soon as is possible. Often a client chasing a bookkeeper is looking for someone to start work yesterday, to help the business owner catch up with paperwork that has been piling up for a number of months

Apparently it can take up to eight weeks to get a response from a Federal Minister. Imagine waiting that long to get back to one of your potential clients? When we live in a world where people want everything instantly, why does the nation accept that things move so slowing in Government - except when it suits the politicians themselves

Contact Us now, and see how long it takes to get a response

Bookkeeping – An Expense or an investment

August 13th, 2008 · No Comments

He regarded the bookkeeping to be an unnecessary expense

Many small business owners struggle with keeping their bookwork up to date. Yet good record keeping is an essential part of any successful small business.

How can you make an informed decision about your business if you don’t know where you are at financially with your business?

You may have an excellent understanding of your business, and can say that you have all the information in your head.

We recently had a client who knew his business so well, that he boasted one client accounted for more than two – thirds of his business turnover.

When we presented the figures, he was shocked to learn that the client actually accounted for less than a third in terms of income, and was actually taking up about 80% of his time.

The business owner had no idea of where his business was, he hadn’t looked at sales figures, had a vague idea about his pending orders, and was heading for collapse.

Yet he took no notice of our warnings, because he regarded the bookkeeping to be an unnecessary expense, and only wanted the minimum of bookkeeping services.

Six months later he closed the doors on his business, before the creditors declared him a bankrupt. So he lost his whole business for the sake of a few hundred dollars in bookkeeping fees that he regarded as an expense.

Good record keeping should be the life-blood of your business, so ensure that you have a good bookkeeping system in place. Contact us for details

ATO Tax Audit - End of Financial Year + BAS

August 7th, 2008 · No Comments

The ATO chose a very busy time to hit our clients with a tax audit. Maybe the ATO use a different calendar from everyone else.

Don’t they realise that the end-of-financial year is a busy time for bookkeepers? On top of that, there’s still the BAS lodgment due date, which for most people is 28 July 2008, unless, like us, you get an extension until next week.

So the very friendly people from the Australian Taxation Office phone up and say they want to do an audit on four of our clients companies! Not that there’s a problem in them doing the audit - it’s just that the extra fifteen hours of work that it takes to get the reports together that they’ve asked for, is fiteen hours out of the time that was scheduled to get the BAS lodgments completed

They left very happy, having seen how efficient, wellorganised, neat and tidy all the documentation was, and commented that the bookkeeping was all in order - that’s what we like to hear!

Save on Bookkeeping Fees

July 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Every one wants to save on bookkeeping fees- even we, as bookkeepers actually want to save our clients on bookkeeping fees - see our special report

If we’re using valuable time on trivial tasks, we are costing the client money

That may sound crazy, but we will do whatever we can to get the client’s work done accurately, efficiently, and speedily. So when we have to spend time fossicking around for payment details, or trying to match up chequebook incomplete butts with bank statments, we feel we are wasting time

If we’re using valuable time on trivial tasks, we are costing the client money. How simple can it be, everytime to write a cheque, just to fill in the cheque butt with the date, the payee, a brief description, and amount.

How long does that take? Maybe a couple of minutes! SO you think it’s wasting time by doing that? Then think about the fact that your bookkeeper has to look for the cheque on the bank statement, and locate the date it was paid, and the amount - then what? The bookkeeper then has to contact you, the client, to ascertain the purpose of the cheque.

If you think you’ll save yourself a couple of minutes by not worrying about your paperwork, then don’t complain to your bookkeeper about the fees you’ll have to pay them. See our special report

Customer Service Mushrooms to Oranges

July 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Photo: Steve Garrington, http://flickr.com/people/wentloog/A while ago we were in a large Department Store at Pacific Fair in Broadbeach - “Do you have a XYZ card?”- What’s one of those? - “It’s a customer loyalty card!” - Oh, so you need a card for that these days, do you? What happened to the days when Customer Service resulted in Customer Loyalty?

That question created a blank and bemused look on the face of the floor staff! The marketing people at many large chain stores should head down to grass roots and see what’s happening in the community.

He gives us eight oranges, and as we turn to leave, he gives us an extra orange!

They should meet the Mushroom man at the Mudgeeraba Farmers Markets, on the Gold Coast, who’s business survives on customer loyalty - Now he’s curious to know what we’ve said about him; have a look HERE to see our previous entry

After seeing the mushroom man, we went to the man selling huge “blood” grapefruit, and some very tasty oranges, eight for three dollars. So he gives us the eight oranges, and as we turn to leave, he gives us an extra orange! These market traders understand the definition of customer service, something that the larger stores have forgotten.

Potential client contacts us because they wanted their bookwork done by yesterday

As bookkeepers, we too understand the need for customer service - so when a potential client contacts us, we know that they wanted their bookwork done by yesterday. This may mean that they are too busy to see us until next week, so we have to be quick and efficient in servicing their needs to catch up on lost time. So if you are in a panic with your bookwork, and are looking for good ‘ol customer service, contact us now for a speedy response

Quicken those Quickbooks Bookkeepers

July 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Quicken Personal Plus - ideal for people dabbling in stocks and shares

She wasn’t very happy with the last two bookkeepers - she specifically asked for a bookkeeper with experience in Quicken Personal Plus, because she has a large share portfolio

Quicken Personal Plus is an ideal accounting software package for traders in stocks and shares - it’s not the same as Quickbooks which is designed for small business owners

When a bookkeeper arrives at your door with experience in MYOB and says: “It’ll be fine, I’ll work it out!” then watch out. You could be paying them to train themselves in a new software

So after speaking to our client, and ascertaining exactly what she wanted, we were able to help her, with the right bookkeeper for the job

Gold Coast Bookkeeper Smells A Rat

July 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Gold Coast Bookkeeper Smells A RatThere was a strange smell coming from the microwave - no matter how much it was cleaned - there was still a really odd smell. If radiation waves don’t put you off a microwave, then this smell surely would.

Sometimes bookkeeping is like that. You’re working through the MYOB figures, and something just doesn’t seem right. Your bookkeeper smells a rat! No matter where you look, or what reports you do, on the surface everything looks fine.

We decided the only option was to pull the casing off from the microwave, and see if we could find what could be the cause of the strange smell. There, tucked under part of the electronics, was a mouse, definitely deceased.

Most likely, it was well cooked, but who was game to find out? How could a mouse possibly squeeze inside the casing is beyond comprehension.

When your bookkeeper feels there’s something not quite right in your bookkeeping, you’ll suddenly find all the detective work coming into play. When your Gold Coast bookkeeper smells a rat, then take notice, because it’s amazing what the bookkeeper can find!
